Linden Lab (LL) announced on its official blog that it intends to phase out one of its mainland continents, Gaeta 1, by the end of 2026. During the same time period, LL plans to launch approximately 90 new regions to the continent of Zindra, an adult mainland continent.

A continent, according to the SL wiki, is a group of more than 30 sims. Currently, there are 14 continents listed on the wiki. General and moderate mainland areas such as Gaeta 1 have seen less usage over time, according to the LL post.

“Adult mainland continues to operate at very high occupancy and shows consistent demand,” LL wrote in the post. “At the same time, some General and Moderate mainland areas, including Gaeta 1, have seen lower overall use over time.”

The transition appears to reflect a reallocation of resources as opposed to an overall downsizing.

“Instead of expanding the total size of mainland,” LL wrote, “we are adjusting existing capacity to better reflect where Residents are most active today.”

This change applies only to the unconnected continent named Gaeta 1. It is not part of a broader mainland closure, and there are no changes to content policy connected to this announcement.”

Current land owners of Gaeta 1 will receive direct communication from LL. They will be offered a “size-for-size parcel replacement.” While current landowners of Gaeta 1 are not obligated to relocate to one of the new regions added to Zindra, they will receive priority access.

To receive feedback from the SL community, LL will host a town hall on April 20th from 11 am until 12 pm SLT at one of the following locations:

“Our goal is to approach this thoughtfully and respectfully, with clear communication at every stage,” LL said in closing.
