Travel & Essay: Roleplay in Yavin IV

By Hoss

James Tome sat upon the stone temple, gazing out at the untamed wilderness that had housed his ambitions as a jedi. He gazed longingly at the birds that fluttered in their formation through the trees together, staying as one no matter the obstacles ahead. He then jumped off into the trees, looking for something to do.

Yavin IV is full of chances for role-play like this, and the famous planet is full of hidden secrets as well. Home to the KOJ otherwise known as the Kalway Order of the Jedi, it is teeming with both force users and non-force users and seeing how it was the former home of famous Jedi master Luke Skywalker you’re bound to discover some archaeological wonders. Now, let’s discuss the entrance simulator.

Upon entering Yavin IV, you can either walk out the front or the back of the “Out of Character” (OOC) area down on the surface. In the front, there is a meditation circle in the middle of a pool of water. Often, this is a center of a jedi congregation where philosophy—among other things—is discussed rather openly. I myself have wound up sitting starry-eyed as the local legends discuss their views on current events or students even. Yes, there are still mentors who complain about their students to each other in the star wars universe. That is one fundamental aspect of tutors that shall never leave us no matter how we morph what they teach us to do.

Nearby, you have several of the main buildings. With a bit of a walk, you arrive the medbay, which has been home to some rather grumpy old jedi doctors and some rather interesting role-plays. With all the beds within it, they seem to be ready for almost any natural or manmade disaster

The medbay, just outside has its own small greenhouse that appears to be self-sufficient. Within the medbay again we go, upstairs and to its extra rooms. Each room lining the top floor of the medbay holds in each a separate area to treat patients who may or may not need privacy during the stay in the place.   One of the rooms has three med-tanks in case of emergency I would assume and for those of you who don’t know there isn’t much a bacta tank visit can’t cure!

The side-rooms downstairs have massive doors that seem like they could withstand a mine or a very powerful explosive going off, and that’s not the only thing defensively the medbay appears to offer its inhabitants. A shield generator seems to have been put up in it to block the door in case of emergency, and I’m pretty sure that it is indeed airtight in case of airborne virus leak. More than likely however it’s to prevent hostile people from coming in, or from getting out.

Outside, in front of the medbay, you have a courthouse and a lightsaber workshop for the aspiring force users and aspiring lawyers alike. Exploring both shows the amazing strength that went into building the structures that help occupy the courtyard next to the jedi temple and shows the fundamental principles of the possible future government on Yavin IV. A connecting bridge spans the gap above the ground, so it is possible to watch passersby while waiting for your turn in the workshop or while waiting to get your sentence.

On the other side of the temple there is a cantina and an archiveif you go farther back.  Between the two stands a lecture hall that has housed the brightest of the Order’s mind for possible centuries upon centuries and more than likely housed a few rebels who switched sides later on also.

“Communication is a vital part of our survival, otherwise we’d all be trying to live by fifty different codes and none of us would know quite what the other was thinking.” A wise jedi once said.

It proves true seeing how much emphasis the KOJ put on communicating with each other. Their lecture halls are of a large size, built to accommodate not only their order but guests if need be. They seem rather open about other cultures and their ideas, which is a good trait for a jedi order. Without this, how can we expect them to be the galaxies best diplomats? The answer is simple: we cannot expect anybody with a closed mind about cultures and their beliefs to be able to practice a standard amount of diplomacy with anything or anyone.

Next to the main sim of Yavin IV, there is another specifically dedicated to the wilderness of the planet.

In it are several monuments, including [one] to Luke Skywalker and one to the first trained Jedi Master of KOJ. Between the two, there is a massive Massassi temple, which is empty and just waiting for somebody to negotiate with the sim owner about moving into! Beside the temple is a sanctuary for the Jedi Order and a few special others, with a beautiful view of the surrounding area. All in all, it’s majestic no matter what part of the wilderness you’re in.

For those of you looking to find a home in a galaxy far far away, Yavin IV has rentals ranging from 125 lindens a week to 500 with varying prim amounts. Perhaps you should take a look, and find yourself a home on a peaceful and majestic planet such as Yavin IV where the fun is waiting for you to create it!

Yavin IV is an amazing dual-sim world represented in the build given forth by its creators and deserves a good look by any person in Second Life. So, why not go out and try the delicate dish that is Yavin IV, home of the Kalway Order of the Jedi and formerly home to the Skywalker Praxeum?
